The following is part of a transcript from a podcast interview between WisdomWomen Founder, Michelle Stransky, and her long-time teacher, Shakti Malan, who passed away on July 18, 2017. This post is part of a tribute series to her and her contributions to WisdomWomen.
Michelle: Can you share why the topic of Sacred Sexuality is important in relation to what is happening in our world right now?
Shakti: I will start to answer that question by speaking about my understanding of why all these dramatic and apparently catastrophic things are happening at the moment, especially in politics. The rise of political powers that are blatantly presenting fear-driven frameworks creates a push for everyone who has been sitting on the fence. We’re at a moment in the evolution of human consciousness where basically people have to make a choice. Either you will go fully into the fear-driven model, which is what we have been building for the past 5,000 years of patriarchy. It’s very rational and has all its reasons. Or, we’ll choose something else – which I call the realm of possibilities, and which is where The Feminine comes in. This other possibility is not what we’re familiar with. It requires a tremendous amount of commitment from any individual or group to stay with a different perspective from what we are constantly faced with. It is calling those of us who have a different perspective to rise up and become the leaders we are meant to be.
WisdomWomen is a very good example of this. WisdomWomen is a space where women are stepping in and saying, “actually we are interested in exploring the creation of different possibilities in all domains of human governments and activity. And we’re not going to wait for somebody to give us permission to do so. We are going to start exploring by simply coming together.” In that degree of freedom that people like the participants of WisdomWomen have developed, we start to have the capacity to dream up a different world that will possibly have a completely different system of governance.
What would be the value of the awakening of The Feminine and Feminine Sexual Energy for this conversation? One could say that there are three main channels through which we relate to reality. The channel we use the most in our world is the mental channel. Unfortunately, the way we use the mental channel, especially in the patriarchal way of doing things, is quite linear. So we only use a certain faculty of our minds. We make decisions based on information that we know from the past. We keep on re-arranging the deck chairs, and not really changing anything except building greater machines that are becoming more destructive.
There are two other faculties we have as human beings. One is the perceptive capacity of our hearts, which is our capacity to perceive as love, to feel, to have compassion. That is a dimension of intelligence that is part of the feminine. The third dimension is the body’s intelligence. It’s our sensate, kinesthetic intelligence – our deeply instinctual, intuitive intelligence. Which is also a dimension of the feminine. The emotional heart and body intelligence have very different ways of operating to the mental intelligence. If we as women can cultivate the capacity to listen from the dimension of the heart and from the body – which requires us to deeply feel ourselves within our bodies and to reconnect to our animal, instinctual bodies – we can have access to vast resources that are going to be invaluable in the shaping of a new world.
Those two domains are expressions of our sexual essence. Our sexual energy gets expressed in the body as subtle and sometimes not so subtle sensations. As a teacher, I take women into the body, closing eyes, and entering into a deep feeling of the inside of the organs. Learning, what do I feel inside my body as sensation when somebody speaks to me? What do I feel inside my heart from the intelligence of my heart? I’m sure you find that in your meetings, women sometimes switch to those channels and come to different levels of understanding and perception.
Michelle: Someone recently asked me how I listen in to WisdomWomen for what is next and know what it is? My work with you and increasing my capacity to listen and feel what is happening inside my body informs what WisdomWomen is asking of me. We’re not normally operating from the feminine channels – these two pieces of how we create our world have been missing. So, the edge for me is to claim that we can re-envision our world by having these parts included.
Shakti: I want to come back to the 3rd dimension of the mind. I believe that developing clarity in the mind, which is a meditative quality of stillness and spaciousness, is also essential as part of it, so that all those dimensions inform us. We will of course use the mind, the mind’s clarity like the sword, to assist with making decisions. If you really move with what you know on a deep, gut level and from the clarity of your mind, you will make the best decisions and you will invent things and imagine new possibilities that you couldn’t have if you just stayed with the mind.
